ASSISTANT BUILDING SURVEYOR

  • SRVO • £Competitive, aligned to experience • Remote / Hybrid – Southeast or Midlands or North

ROLE OVERVIEW

We are looking for an Assistant Building Surveyor to join SRVO’s Building Consultancy Division, supporting the delivery of a wide range of building surveying, project and compliance services across the UK.

This role is ideal for a recent Building Surveying graduate (or early-career surveyor) who wants structured development, broad technical exposure and a clear pathway towards MRICS.

You’ll work closely with Building Surveying Directors, Associates and Senior Surveyors, supporting projects and professional instructions across residential, commercial and mixed-use assets. The work is varied, technically grounded and aligned to the skills and competencies required to progress through the APC.

ROLE EXPECTATIONS

This is a hands-on role that will develop your technical ability, judgement and confidence through real project and inspection exposure.

You’ll be supported by experienced surveyors, with clear supervision and mentoring, while gradually taking on more responsibility as your competence develops.

The role includes site inspections, report support, contract administration exposure and project delivery assistance. You’ll also be expected to build strong working relationships with clients and internal stakeholders, particularly within residential property management environments.

This role is remote or hybrid depending on location, with regional travel required and occasional overnight stays depending on project need.

WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE

You’ll be successful in this role if:

  • You develop strong technical foundations and apply feedback quickly
  • You deliver accurate work to a high standard and take ownership of your outputs
  • You build professional relationships with colleagues, clients and contractors
  • You support projects reliably and develop confidence across contract administration
  • You progress steadily through your APC pathway towards MRICS

HOW YOU’LL SPEND MOST OF YOUR TIME

Most weeks, you’ll be:

  • Supporting Project Management and Contract Administration on projects typically ranging from £50k to £2m+
  • Assisting with inspections to prepare scopes of work, specifications and tender documentation (up to £500k)
  • Supporting pre-construction information reviews and RAMS review processes
  • Assisting senior staff acting as CDM Principal Designer, including PCI packs, CPP review and H&S file preparation
  • Supporting building defects advice under senior supervision across a range of property types and ages
  • Assisting with Planned Preventative Maintenance reports, lifecycle schedules and budget costings
  • Supporting pre-acquisition surveys across commercial, retail, industrial and residential premises
  • Assisting with leaseholder alteration requests, including desktop and inspection-based reviews
  • Supporting dilapidations instructions, including schedules and landlord/tenant advice
  • Assisting on Party Wall matters under the supervision of an experienced Party Wall Surveyor
  • Supporting monitoring of development works, services installations and project delivery
  • Building relationships with internal property management teams across your allocated region
  • Supporting a wider range of instructions as your experience develops, including Building Safety Regulator (BSR) related applications

You’ll work in a remote or hybrid way, balancing home working, site inspections and team collaboration, with flexibility and trust built in from the outset.

WHO THIS ROLE IS FOR

This role suits someone who:

  • Is a recent Building Surveying graduate from a UK institution, with a RICS-accredited degree (minimum 2:1)
  • Wants a structured and well-supported pathway to MRICS within approximately two years
  • Has a strong interest in building pathology, construction technology and compliance-led work
  • Is keen to develop across project delivery, contract administration and professional surveying services
  • Communicates clearly and professionally with clients, colleagues and contractors
  • Is organised, detail-focused and able to manage deadlines effectively
  • Is comfortable working independently in a remote environment while being part of a supportive team
  • Holds a full, clean UK driving licence and is willing to travel regionally

It would be advantageous if you also have:

  • Exposure to contract administration or tendering processes
  • Basic understanding of JCT MW 2016 and repair/maintenance projects
  • AutoCAD capability
  • Residential property management sector exposure

EXPERIENCE THAT HELPS

  • Exposure to building surveying, property, construction or consultancy environments
  • Understanding of specifications, tender preparation and basic contract administration
  • Awareness of planned maintenance and lifecycle planning
  • Knowledge of construction technology, building pathology and relevant legislation
  • Understanding of CDM regulations and health & safety fundamentals
  • Strong written communication skills and attention to detail
  • A proactive, “can do” mindset and willingness to learn quickly

YOUR PATHWAY TO MRICS AT SRVO

  • Dedicated MRICS-qualified supervisors and counsellors
  • Structured mentoring and regular progress reviews

  • Protected time for APC-related development and CPD

For most candidates joining at Assistant level, this typically results in chartership within approximately 24 months, assuming steady engagement with the APC pathway and depending on entry point and experience.
